Eva Katzler – Author of the “ Florentine and Pig” stories from Bloomsbury Publishing

Q. Were Florentine and Pig based on the characteristics of people that you know or have known? If so, what were these characteristics that inspired you?

A. I went to a Performing Arts College in Liverpool and very early on I met a dancer called Florentine. She became a wonderful friend who had a cheeky sense of humour and the kindest of hearts – the character Florentine was certainly inspired by her. Pig’s loyal, fun and silly characteristics are based on a combination of many of my friends and family – me included!

Q. What are your earliest memories of cooking with your mother – or any other family member?  What kind of things do you remember making with them? How old were you when you first started cooking with them?

A. I baked and cooked with my mum from a very early age. I remember tracing the outline of the cake tin onto baking paper, splodging raspberry jam into buns and greasing loaf tins. I loved the feeling of being an important part of the kitchen team!

Q. How much of the visual image of the characters, Florentine and Pig, did you have in your mind prior to the illustrations being created?
A. I had a very strong idea of how I wanted the characters to look, but I am not an illustrator – I can’t draw for toffee! Finding an illustrator to make these characters come to life was a dream come true and Jess Mikhail has done a sensational job of interpreting my initial ideas and adding her own unique magic to make Florentine and Pig the beautiful and expressive characters that they are.

Q. From your website it looks like you have your own child/dren.   Are they now the main source of inspiration for your stories?  Where else are you now finding inspiration for your stories?
A. I don’t have my own children. However I have always been surrounded by little ones, whether they be friends’ children, younger cousins or children within my community. I am constantly surprised by kids – what they think, what they say, and what they do. I take enormous inspiration from them and am learning from them all the time.

Q. What kind of writer are you? Do you only start writing when you have the whole story worked out or do you start with a rough idea and see where the characters take you?
A. I tend to have an idea of a full story before I begin ….. but I do find myself being unexpectedly dragged off on a tangent, mostly by Pig. He often makes me laugh out loud…which is embarrassing when I’m writing in a public café…

Q. When you are writing your stories do you have set periods of time during the day or night when you write or do you take a more spontaneous approach to your writing?
A. I definitely block out time to write. Being a creative person, having structure to my week is very important, especially as there are so many other aspects of Florentine and Pig for me to manage and stay on top of – the website, Facebook, Twitter etc. I love it to bits, but I do have to be organised or I could end up in a spectacular pickle.

Q. Roald Dahl used to write in a garden shed.  Where do you find that you do your best writing?
A. If I had a garden shed, I suspect I’d be in it a lot. However, not having a garden shed – or a garden for that matter although I am working on it – I settle myself anywhere that’s comfortable. I find that I can write almost anywhere – I am happy in a café or at home… if I have my laptop and a nice cup of tea then I’m very happy to tap away. Cake helps too, obviously.

Q. What type of music do you write as a singer songwriter?  Will you be creating any songs for Florentine and Pig?
A. I will certainly be writing songs for Florentine and Pig. Cooking songs, crafting songs, silly songs and songs to sing away to in the car – music was such a huge part of my childhood and I’m excited to be creating new music for children to enjoy now. I loved writing the theme tune to Florentine and Pig. Being in the studio whistling, banging drums and hooting horns with my friend and producer Chris Sheehan was the most fun I’ve had in a recording studio for a very long time.

Q. Are Florentine and Pig the first children’s stories you have written?
A. Yes they are!

Q. Are you working on any new Florentine and Pig stories at the moment?
A. Yes I am – there are a few more Florentine and Pig books to follow, but I’m afraid they are top secret. Pig would tell me off if I told you…

Thank you Eva!
