Aunt Maisie’s Kitchen
Recipes for Good Wholesome Food: Good Quality Home Cooked Food for Busy Families.
Welcome to Aunt Maisie’s kitchen
On these pages you will find recipes and food ideas that have all the qualities of the food I serve in my own home – good quality, home-cooked food for busy families.
Making your own soup can be quick and easy – and far cheaper than buying from your local supermarket. My Carrot and Lentil Soup is always very popular with both kids and adults. Another thrifty meal is Bubble and Bacon Squeak. Stuffed tomatoes are fun for little ones to help make and full of vitamins and protein as well. For a thrifty, easy to make dessert, try my Chocolate Bread and Butter Pudding. Great for using up left over bread and just about every kid loves chocolate.
I love recipes that really work, where you feel there is something just right about them.
Sadly, however, some of these traditional recipes seem to get buried under an avalanche of passing fancies. Dishes that have stood the test of time, lining a million or more happy tummies get sidelined in favour of something whose charms will disappear after a few months. Here are four dishes that have stood the test of time.
Coq au Vin
Baked Apple with Raisins and Cinnamon
Posh Bread and Butter Pudding
Spicy Turkey Soup
Christmas dinners will leave you with mounds of leftover turkey. Don’t throw away your old Turkey carcass – even if you’re sick to death of turkey by the time the meat has all gone!
This lean meat is low in fat and an excellent source of protein so don’t let it go to waste. And you don’t have to settle for another boring turkey sandwich, it’s simply a matter of being creative.
For example, by adding a few more ingredients, the remains of your turkey will make a tasty soup to feed all the family:

Here is my version of a traditional Cantonese dish, Cha Siu Pork.
Although it is possible to use other kinds of meat in this dish, I still prefer pork and have used tenderloin of pork here.
A quick meal based on another classic Chinese dish.
This dish is easy to prepare once you get the hang of it but you do need to have a number of spices in your kitchen. Once you have them, they will stand you in good stead.
Here is a dessert that is a favourite of many people and is certainly one of mine, whenever I go to a Chinese restaurant.
These cookies are so quick and easy to make that even the kids can make them.
