Exhibition – History of the Borough’s Buildings – until March 2, 2013
December 19, Richmond Museum’s latest exhibition, The Building of a Borough, was unveiled by eminent local historian John Cloake.
The Building of a Borough is a major new exhibition showcasing the finest examples from the collection of 22,000 building plans held in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames’ Local Studies Collection. In his opening speech, John Cloake described the project as a “lovely collaboration between the Museum and 40 members of The London Borough of Richmond Local Studies Volunteer Support Group.
The exhibition is the culmination of a 3 year Heritage Lottery funded project, which saw volunteers accessioning and cataloguing some 22,000 building plans, which were formerly in the possession of the local government authorities, and are now held by the Local Studies archive.
The collection of plans, which date from 1880 to the 1960s, illustrates the history of the towns and villages of Richmond upon Thames as represented in the buildings that were designed and constructed – from workmen’s cottages and dairies to grand theatres and large housing estates.
Some of these plans are on display in the Museum of Richmond and in the complementary exhibition at Orleans House Gallery; many more may be viewed on line at:-
To accompany the exhibition, a free booklet has been produced (limited availability) and a series of events has been organised including a Film Season, talks and walks. More information on these events can be found on the Museum’s website: www.museumofrichmond.com
